A NEW CENTRE FOR A NEW SCIENCE

This unique commission was for a unique institution. The Hiram Trust and Ruskin Mill Educational Trust both work to bring a healing impulse to challenged young people through working with the crafts and in nature. They needed a building in which to study the science behind their methods, and this building needed to be as special as their approach.

The building works at a number of different levels.

Functionally, it provides space for permanent research staff and for seminars and group work. The centre space is a space of both reflection and connectivity.

Above is a dome dedicated to the sun. It can be used to observe the sun and the moon and the constellations as they cycle through the sky. At the summer solstice the sun is allowed to penetrate deep into the earth, to the zodiac room beneath. At the winter solstice the sun penetrates right through the building to the sill of a very special window on the north wall.

In between sun and moon - the earth. A space where we meet in social interaction.
